When the Calculate Step Goes Sideways: A 20-Second Recovery Script

TL;DR

A flubbed calculate step is not the end. Use a 20-second recovery script: name it, isolate, re-chunk, land the so-what.

Every candidate flubs a calculate step eventually. Interviewers care what you do next. Freezing, apologizing, or restarting from zero burns the rest of the case.

Build a recovery script so a bad intermediate does not end the interview.

The 20-second recovery

  1. Name it: "That intermediate looks off. I'll re-check the setup."
  2. Isolate: restate the equation in one line (price times volume, not a new framework).
  3. Re-chunk: calculate one piece again out loud, then the next.
  4. Land the so-what: even with a rough number, say fact, meaning, decision.

Drill it this week

  • Set a 3-minute timer on a market-sizing prompt.
  • Intentionally mess up the first intermediate, then run the recovery script.
  • Finish with a recommendation and the biggest risk.

Silent worksheets never teach recovery. Voice drills do.
